All of them are damage-free!

Moldavite is a natural tektite, a type of glass created during a meteorite impact. It formed approximately 14.8 million years ago when the impact that created Germany’s Nördlinger Ries crater generated extreme heat and pressure. Surface rock was melted, projected through the atmosphere and cooled into pieces of natural glass. Some of this material landed hundreds of kilometres away across what is now the Czech Republic, including the South Bohemian Moldavite fields.

Size: Approx. 2.5 × 1.5 × 1cm
Weight: 5.25g
Origin: Chlum nad Malší, South Bohemia, Czech Republic
Classification: Natural tektite / impact glass
Colour: Naturally occurring green Moldavite
You will receive the exact piece shown

About Chlum Moldavite

Chlum, pronounced approximately “Khloom”, is located around 20km south of České Budějovice. It is one of the best-known Moldavite localities and has produced some of the most recognisable South Bohemian material.

Moldavite from this area is particularly associated with:

• Green to olive-green natural glass
• Translucency that becomes clearer when held to a strong light
• Grooved, ridged, pitted or deeply sculpted surfaces
• Natural variations in shape, thickness and texture
• Internal bubbles and flowing structures, which may be visible under magnification

The textured surface has not been carved or created by hand. Much of Moldavite’s characteristic sculpting developed after its formation through long-term contact with water, minerals and naturally occurring acids in the surrounding sediment.

What Is Moldavite Made From?

Moldavite is a silica-rich natural glass formed mainly from terrestrial material. It is connected to a meteorite impact, but it is not a fragment of the meteorite itself. It is also not technically a crystal or mineral because it does not have an ordered crystalline structure.

Moldavite commonly contains:

• Silicon dioxide
• Aluminium oxide
• Smaller amounts of iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and other elements
• Microscopic bubbles and internal flow structures created while the glass was molten

Its colour can range from pale yellow-green through olive and forest green to deep green-brown.
