About Nová Hospoda Moldavite

Nová Hospoda lies within the established Vrábče Moldavite-producing area. The principal Moldavite deposits in this part of South Bohemia are associated with ancient sands and gravels along the western edge of the České Budějovice Basin.

Material from the wider Vrábče area is particularly known for:

• Deeply textured natural surfaces

How the Surface Texture Formed

The sculpting found on Nová Hospoda Moldavite was not carved or applied by hand. After the Moldavite formed, long-term contact with groundwater, minerals and naturally occurring acids within the surrounding sediment gradually etched the surface.

The composition and density of the gravel deposits affected how this process developed. This created the pits, channels and detailed patterns for which Moldavite from the Vrábče area is known.

How Moldavite Formed

Moldavite is a natural tektite, a type of impact glass formed approximately 14.8 million years ago during the meteorite impact that created the Nördlinger Ries crater in southern Germany.

The impact produced extreme heat and pressure, melting silica-rich surface material and projecting it high into the atmosphere. This molten material cooled into natural glass before landing across parts of what are now the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria.

Much of the finest known Moldavite is found in South Bohemia, hundreds of kilometres from the original impact site.

Moldavite is connected to a meteorite impact, but it is not a piece of the meteorite. It consists mainly of terrestrial material that was melted and displaced during the impact.

What Is Moldavite Made From?

Moldavite is a silica-rich natural glass. Although it is commonly grouped with crystals, it is not technically a crystal or mineral because it does not have an ordered crystalline structure.

Its composition commonly includes:

• Silicon dioxide
• Aluminium oxide
• Smaller amounts of iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and other elements
• Microscopic bubbles and internal flow structures formed while the glass was molten

Moldavite ranges from transparent to opaque. Its natural colours include pale yellow-green, olive, bottle green, forest green and deep green-brown. The exact colour is influenced by composition, thickness and locality.
