This natural Moldavite comes from Pařez, a small field locality within the wider Vrábče Moldavite-producing area of South Bohemia. The name is commonly written as Parez or Paréz by international dealers when the Czech diacritic is unavailable.

Pařez lies close to Nová Hospoda, and the two are often regarded as sister localities within the broader Vrábče deposit area. Moldavite from Pařez is particularly valued for its strong natural surface etching, deep grooves and well-defined pitting.

I have managed to find a direct source for these pieces, cutting out the middlemen and allowing me to offer them at a much more affordable price. Moldavite of this quality and known locality has previously been priced at around £22 to £25 per gram. These pieces are priced at £18 per gram, making them a genuine bargain.

About Pařez Moldavite

Pařez is a much smaller collecting area than the large commercially worked Chlum deposit. Pieces with confirmed Pařez provenance are less commonly available and are of particular interest to collectors who value exact locality information.

Material from Pařez is commonly associated with:

Pařez and the Vrábče Deposits

The principal Moldavite deposits in the Vrábče area are found within ancient sands and gravels along the western edge of the České Budějovice Basin.

These sediment layers helped preserve many pieces while slowly altering their surfaces. Long-term contact with groundwater, minerals and naturally occurring acids gradually etched the glass, creating the grooves, ridges and pitted patterns now associated with the locality.

Pařez has not been worked on the same commercial scale as Chlum. Material attributed to this exact locality is more likely to have come from smaller field digs, limited recoveries or older private collections.

How Moldavite Formed

Moldavite is a natural tektite, a type of impact glass formed approximately 14.8 million years ago during the meteorite impact that created the Nördlinger Ries crater in southern Germany.

The extreme heat and pressure generated by the impact melted silica-rich surface material and projected it high into the atmosphere. The molten material cooled into natural glass before landing across parts of what are now the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria.

The South Bohemian Moldavite fields lie hundreds of kilometres from the original crater and contain many of the best-known deposits.

Moldavite is connected to a meteorite impact, but it is not a fragment of the meteorite itself. It formed mainly from terrestrial material that was melted and displaced during the impact.

What Is Moldavite Made From?

Moldavite is a silica-rich natural glass. Although it is commonly sold alongside crystals, it is not technically a crystal or mineral because it does not have an ordered crystalline structure.

Its composition commonly includes:

• Silicon dioxide
• Aluminium oxide
• Smaller amounts of iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and other elements
• Microscopic bubbles and internal flow structures formed while the glass was molten

Moldavite ranges from transparent to opaque. Its natural colours include pale yellow-green, olive, bottle green, forest green and deep green-brown. Colour and transparency vary according to chemical composition, thickness and locality.
