These glossy, freeform tumbles range from almost colourless to pale champagne. Look closely and you’ll see fine brown lines and tiny dark dots arranged in rows inside the clear Scapolite. The shape, tint and pattern of inclusions vary from stone to stone.

The Rainbow Effect

Those delicate rows are where the colour appears. In Rainbow Scapolite, closely spaced inclusions can act like a natural diffraction grating, splitting reflected light into flashes of colour. Magnetite has been identified in studied examples of this material. To see the effect, shine a small white light across the stone from the side and turn it slowly. The shimmer appears at certain angles and can shift colour as you move the stone.

Under UV Light

Tanzanian Scapolite can also fluoresce under longwave UV. The colour and strength of the glow vary between stones. These ones are pink.
