Labradorite carvings like this are among the most expensive because they are the most demanding to make. Each piece begins with carefully selected carving-grade Labradorite, chosen not only for its colour but also for how the internal layers run, as the stone’s flash will only appear when the figure is oriented at very precise angles. Much of the rough is lost during this process, and the risk of failure is high due to Labradorite’s natural cleavage and tendency to split without warning. The carving is done slowly by hand with diamond tools and constant cooling, and fine details are carefully shaped to avoid chipping or dulling the flash. Multiple stages of sanding and meticulous polishing are required to activate the colour across curved surfaces, a process that cannot be rushed. A single Labradorite carving can take 60 to well over 100 hours to complete, with many attempts abandoned partway through. This level of work relies on specialist knowledge traditionally passed down through generations of master carvers, and as fewer artisans now hold these skills, high-quality Labradorite figurative carvings are becoming increasingly rare and valued.

This is an impressive, substantial Buddha carving weighing over half a kilo, sculpted from high-quality Labradorite. The stone displays the characteristic phenomenon of labradorescence, with striking flashes of metallic blue, gold, and green that shift as the piece is moved. The carving captures the Buddha seated with the right hand raised in the Abhaya Mudra (the Gesture of Fearlessness), which symbolises protection and reassurance.
